1 SAM 17: 32-51

David said to Saul, “Let no one lose heart on account of this Philistine; your servant will go and fight him.”Saul replied, “You are not able to go out against this Philistine and fight him; you are only a young man, and he has been a warrior from his youth.”But David said to Saul, “Your servant has been keeping his father’s sheep. When a lion or a bear came and carried off a sheep from the flock, I went after it, struck it and rescued the sheep from its mouth. When it turned on me, I seized it by its hair, struck it and killed it. Your servant has killed both the lion and the bear; this uncircumcised Philistine will be like one of them, because he has defied the armies of the living God. The Lord who rescued me from the paw of the lion and the paw of the bear will rescue me from the hand of this Philistine.”Saul said to David, “Go, and the Lord be with you.”Then Saul dressed David in his own tunic. He put a coat of armor on him and a bronze helmet on his head. David fastened on his sword over the tunic and tried walking around, because he was not used to them.“I cannot go in these,” he said to Saul, “because I am not used to them.” So he took them off. Then he took his staff in his hand, chose five smooth stones from the stream, put them in the pouch of his shepherd’s bag and, with his sling in his hand, approached the Philistine.Meanwhile, the Philistine, with his shield bearer in front of him, kept coming closer to David. He looked David over and saw that he was little more than a boy, glowing with health and handsome, and he despised him. He said to David, “Am I a dog, that you come at me with sticks?” And the Philistine cursed David by his gods. “Come here,” he said, “and I’ll give your flesh to the birds and the wild animals! ”David said to the Philistine, “You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the Lord Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. This day the Lord will deliver you into my hands, and I’ll strike you down and cut off your head. This very day I will give the carcasses of the Philistine army to the birds and the wild animals, and the whole world will know that there is a God in Israel. All those gathered here will know that it is not by sword or spear that the Lord saves; for the battle is the Lord’s, and he will give all of you into our hands.”As the Philistine moved closer to attack him, David ran quickly toward the battle line to meet him. Reaching into his bag and taking out a stone, he slung it and struck the Philistine on the forehead. The stone sank into his forehead, and he fell facedown on the ground. So David triumphed over the Philistine with a sling and a stone; without a sword in his hand he struck down the Philistine and killed him.David ran and stood over him. He took hold of the Philistine’s sword and drew it from the sheath. After he killed him, he cut off his head with the sword.
As Christians, we face many “giants” in our walk with Christ, but through the study and application of His Word, and the power of the Holy Spirit, we can learn to be “giant - killers”!!There were no “giant - killers” in Saul’s army until David came along. The entire army of Israel was cowering in fear of Goliath and his threats. When David, the “giant - killer” arrived, things began to change for the better! God is still looking for “giant - killers” today! He is still looking for men and women who will serve Him with a whole heart and allow Him to empower them to fight against the “giants” of our day. David's concern was not winning this battle. His concern was preserving the identity of the glory of God. That's what makes David a champion; not his size, not his armor, not his abilities, not his brilliance. What makes him a champion is his concern is that the whole world know there is a God in Israel. We will never, ever be champions if our only concern is what we have to offer and how people view what we have to offer. What makes David a giant killer is his big heart. It's the challenge of focus.  David teaches us as he cuts off the Giants head is that we need to know how in Christ TO FINISH THE JOB! If there are giants in your life--temptations and lusts--and things that you are having a difficult time controlling, at some point you need to kill them. You don't just need just to wound them and set them aside. You don't need to just put bitterness off for a while and let it come back. You need to take care of it. David is a man after God's own heart because he faced all these challenges and he won. But he didn't win based on his height or his ability or his good looks or his armor. He won based on his heart. If you want to be a person who pleases the heart of God, accept the challenges that God gives you; only use your heart to defeat your enemy, not anything people are looking for in your life. It will not only surprise your enemy, it will surprise your friends as well. You know the only person it won't surprise? It won't surprise God, because God is looking for people who have a heart that beats with His. You can be a “giant - killer” in the Army of the Living God if you will meet the qualifications as David did. Let’s take a look at the characteristics of a “giant - killer”

Hebrews 11:6 And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him. God is not looking for those who have plenty of ability because as our Father said to Gideon, I WANT PEOPLE TO KNOW IT WAS ME AND NOT YOU!!! David said in faith to the Giant that just the same way Jehovah helped him to overcome the bear and the lion, the LIVING GOD will help him to slay the Giant! As a matter of fact God is looking for those who has limited ability! You see if you already possess what it takes to get the job done then why would you need God and it will be you getting the glory not THE ALMIGHTY! As you see with David, he was too young, too small and too short to complete with a Giant like Goliath but the one thing David did have and God requires is A HEART TO PLEASE HIM! You see God can overcome any physical limitations but you must possess a heart for the LORD and faith in God to be used as a Giant killer! Are we responsible with the calling that God has given us even to the little details for this is how our Lord test our faith! In Luke 16:10 it says that He that is faithful in that which is least is faithful also in much so what is God saying well maybe many are not Giant Killers because they do not trust God in the small things so how can they trust and have faith in Him in the big matters such as overcoming GIANTS!
If you read the text Saul tried to help David by giving him his armor which was too big and heavy but David said no and sometimes we need to refuse any help that may interfere with the supernatural work of our Father. If God be with us who can be against us? When God calls us we have to be ready right then and there. Learn to drop all the past problems on the cross and remove any and all of that excess baggage and don’t take upon anything that is not from God himself for you even if it is offered to you. David did not hesitate when he heard how the Giant had defiled the ARMYS OF GOD and was ready to fight even though he was told he was too young and too small.  1 Samuel 17:22 And David left his carriage in the hand of the keeper of the carriage, and ran into the army, and came and saluted his brethren. This speaks of commitment, and of leaving all to follow the Lord.2 Tim. 2:4 No man that warreth entangleth himself with the affairs of this life; that he may please him who hath chosen him to be a soldier. A giant - killer must be willing to lay aside everything that would prevent him from being victorious over his enemy. Luke 14:33 So likewise, whosoever he be of you that forsaketh not all that he hath, he cannot be my disciple. Learn to travel light and allow God clothe you in His supernatural power and let that be the weapons of your warfare, remember this is NOT ABOUT YOU but about CHRIST IN YOU!!!
1 Samuel 17:26 And David spake to the men that stood by him, saying, What shall be done to the man that killeth this Philistine, and taketh away the reproach from Israel? for who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should defy the armies of the living God? When David heard Goliath defying the army of God, he was provoked and wanted to vindicate the honor of the Lord’s people. He was seeking to glorify the Lord, not himself. Look at David and his reaction when he heard what the Giant had said about God and the armies of God. You can almost see the anger of the young man and he ran out to protect the glory of God. Can you imagine the smile on Gods face when he saw His young son running out there just to protect the glory of His name? WOW this is how God reacts when He sees us willing without even considering what we are against but willing to do it for His glory. As the soldiers of Israel waited for 40 days and still no one would accept the challenge of this adversary, it was young David that ran to this 9' 9" Giant and killed him for mocking his God and !!!Matthew 5:16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven. 1 Cor. 6:20 For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.
1 Samuel 17:28 And Eliab his eldest brother heard when he spake unto the men; and Eliab’s anger was kindled against David, and he said, Why camest thou down hither? and with whom hast thou left those few sheep in the wilderness? I know thy pride, and the naughtiness of thine heart; for thou art come down that thou mightest see the battle. David’s brother slandered his character and misjudged his motives, but David did not allow this to distract him from his God given mission. Remember Nehemiah and the Israelites were scoffed at and ridiculed for rebuilding the walls of Jerusalem, but they built them anyway!! And how about our Lord Jesus who was criticized and misjudged, but He was obedient even unto death. Matthew 5:11-12 Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake. [12] Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you. Eventhough Davids brother got upset with David for asking questions about what did the Giant say, the younger brother David did not allow this to distract him from what God had put into his heart. The older brother even went to the point of slandering David and criticizing him but David was not moved by it. How many times have we heard negative things from those around us, even our so called loved ones that we believe would support us as we stand for our KING!!! A Giant Killer does not allow the things that people say hinder what he must do for the Lord because God is 1st and foremost!

1 Samuel 17:32 And David said to Saul, Let no man’s heart fail because of him; thy servant will go and fight with this Philistine. A. Giant - Killers have this kind of confidence because they serve the all - powerful God, and no circumstance is greater than He.1 John 4:4 Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.1 Chron. 19:13 Be of good courage, and let us behave ourselves valiantly for our people, and for the cities of our God: and let the Lord do that which is good in his sight. To be fearless you can’t use your physical senses because they will logically tell you that you cannot do it. I am sure that David's mind said ARE YOU CRAZY but his heart said ANYTHING FOR MY DAD IN HEAVEN!!! You have to know without a doubt based upon faith and love for God that you can and will be successful one because you are doing it for the Lord and two because His word says so and 3 because you are not doing it on your own but Christ is the one who will do it through you Psalm 27:3 Though an host should encamp against me, my heart shall not fear: though war should rise against me, in this will I be confident. Psalm 91:5 Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by night; nor for the arrow that flieth by day; Psalm 112:8 His heart is established, he shall not be afraid, until he see his
desire upon his enemies.Psalm 118:6 The Lord is on my side; I will not fear: what can man do unto me?

Samuel 17:34-37 And David said unto Saul, Thy servant kept his father’s sheep, and there came a lion, and a bear, and took a lamb out of the flock: [35] And I went out after him, and smote him, and delivered it out of his mouth: and when he arose against me, I caught him by his beard, and smote him, and slew him. [36] Thy servant slew both the lion and the bear: and this uncircumcised Philistine shall be as one of them, seeing he hath defied the armies of the living God. [37] David said moreover, The Lord that delivered me out of the paw of the lion, and out of the paw of the bear, he will deliver me out of the hand of this Philistine. And Saul said unto David, Go, and the Lord be with thee. When Saul objected to David’s fighting Goliath because of his youth, David said, “Don’t worry king. God has been training me ‘for such a time as this’.” To be a giant - killer we must recognize that the Lord is training us each day through seemingly insignificant tasks and events.Proverbs 16:9 A man’s heart deviseth his way: but the Lord directeth his steps. You see eventhough Davis is young he has seen God working in him and through him and he knows that God will deliver him even now. We need to serve God faithfully and remember the MANY times HE rescued us and did great things for us through us therefore our training is from OUR SERVICE FOR HIM!!!

Luke 10:19 Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you. Philip. 4:13 I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.

A Giant - Killer Does Not Hesitate to Fight Against His Enemy for he or she knows that it is God who will do the battle 1 Samuel 17:48 And it came to pass, when the Philistine arose, and came and drew nigh to meet David, that David hasted, and ran toward the army to meet the Philistine.

A. David did not need to take time to “pray about it”. He was already assured of victory because of his faith in the Lord.

1 Samuel 17:50-51 So David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling and with a stone, and smote the Philistine, and slew him; but there was no sword in the hand of David. [51] Therefore David ran, and stood upon the Philistine, and took his sword, and drew it out of the sheath thereof, and slew him, and cut off his head therewith. And when the Philistines saw their champion was dead, they fled. He provides no second opportunity for the enemy to recover and take advantage of him. Ephes. 4:27 [GW] Don’t give the devil any opportunity {to work}. 1 Peter 5:8 [GW] Keep your mind clear, and be alert. Your opponent the devil is prowling around like a roaring lion as he looks for someone to devour. These are some of the characteristics of a “Giant - Killer”. Do they apply to your life? Are you the best “Giant - Killer” you can be for the Lord? Why not call upon Him now, and ask Him to make you a “Giant - Killer” for His glory. Ephes. 6:10 Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might.
